THE Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) has reported that since 2016, 31 rogue fish aggregating devices (FADs) have been retrieved by Commonwealth agencies off the Australian coast. These FADs have broken away from their anchors and may have drifted vast distances from well outside Australia’s territorial waters. They’re a risk to marine mammals and turtles which can get entangled in their trailing gear. They also pose a threat to vessels and could potentially present biosecurity risks, so AFMA works with the Department of Agricultural to determine the best disposal methods. AFMA-managed Commonwealth fisheries don’t use FADs and recreational FADs are anchored, monitored and maintained by state authorities, so these “captures” are definitely unwelcome intruders.…

A lure is an illusion presented by an angler to a fish. In order to deceive a fish into attacking a lure the angler must consider a number of factors that guide the selection of a lure. 90 per cent of modern anglers are followers rather than leaders, and while they may stalk Facebook looking at what prominent sponsored anglers are using to catch fish, not too many anglers think for themselves about the principles involved in choosing the right lure for the right situation. WE recently had a very bad run of lost fish. I’m talking mainly big longtail tuna on lures here. Big longtails are hard work. They have hard, bony mouths and getting a solid hook up on the outside is damn near impossible. A good hook set inside the mouth is much easier but the fish has to inhale the lure to achieve that. Once hooked they’ll scream off at a hundred miles an hour then turn straight back at you. If you’re not super-fast and don’t wind furiously to keep the tension on, that hook will fall out very easily. It’s fair to say the southern half of Australia receives little recognition as far as big fish accolades. Instead it is the warmer waters of the north that tend to receive all the attention, boasting a plethora of drag pulling species capable of testing even the most experienced and hardcore angler. TACKLE innovation has come a long way in recent years. We mostly hear about higher end, pricier technology making it possible to catch bigger, faster fish. While that’s fantastic, at the other end of the spectrum, entry level and affordable tackle has also come along in leaps and bounds. Old habits die hard. At least that’s my experience fishing New Zealand. While I’ve visited the South Island many times, and have a good feel for the place, besides a couple of saltwater trips, the North has been neglected in favour of familiarity. OVER the past few months we have had a great run of medium sized black marlin off the Gold Coast. These fish have been in 70 to 80 metres of water feeding on the extensive schools of slimy mackerel present in the area. One local boat, French Look 3, even managed to catch 33 black marlin between 30 and 100 kilos in a single day. While the catches have been outstanding, the fish only seem to respond to live baits with any gusto, and I’ve only managed a few marlin on lures this summer. INTERNATIONAL researchers are concerned that recreational fishers are increasingly targeting sharks and rays, as reported by Sea Around Us. It’s estimated that from the 1950s to the mid-2010s total recreational fish catches world wide have grown from around 280,000 tonnes per year to around 900,000 tonnes. About 54,000 tonnes are sharks and rays. One of the study’s co-authors is from the University of Western Australia and highlights fishing for large tiger sharks and hammerheads from the beach as an emerging problem, as although most of the sharks are released it’s considered that the long fight and beaching means many of these globally threatened animals don’t survive. Most fishos who chase apex estuary fish would normally associate the term "ghost" with mulloway. To be fair, it’s probably correct too as "jewies" can be strange fish to work out and catch on a consistent basis. Over the past five years in particular though, the veil of secrecy around catching jewies on both bait and lures has lifted, and social media displays countless fish caught in our local, the Hawkesbury River. HUKA LODGE Huka Lodge was built in the 1920s. It was originally built as a trout lodge and over the years has welcomed some notable guests. Famed fishing and western writer Zane Grey stayed at Huka during his well-known New Zealand expedition. Since then the lodge moved away from being an exclusive trout destination and major upgrades were made to create one of the world’s most exclusive destinations. The list of notable guests grew and includes several visits from the Queen and well-known actors and performers. Recently we spent a week fishing a Queensland barra lake. Word was out that the fish were biting and plenty of anglers were trying their luck. It was clear from conversations at the ramp and our accommodation that quite a few were struggling to get a strike.
