You typically have two options – private or public land. Most private land owners don’t like fishos accessing rivers through their property. It’s understandable. My son and his wife moved to Launceston, Tasmania for a one year contract in 2021. Michael is an extremely keen angler who has often featured in the pages of this magazine since he was a little kid, and the move to Tasmania thrust him into a totally different fishing environment chasing species he was pretty unfamiliar with. GLIDEBAITS are becoming increasingly popular for Australian sportfish. They are similar to swimbaits and have a lifelike baitfish profile, but are more minimalistic in action. As the name suggests, glidebaits employ a gliding side-to-side “S” action – a result of the hinged design – and require little rod work. In fact, a slow wind is often all that is required to make glidebaits “snake” through the water. Glidebaits have been used in Japan and the US to successfully target largemouth bass for over a decade, but these peculiar lures are becoming particularly popular with Australian anglers for Murray cod and impoundment barramundi. Although on the morning of this trip the greenish waters of Shoal Bay were relatively clean by Darwin standards, visibility was still less than a metre. DPI scientists have been using a variety of techniques to help unlock secrets of spawning and recruitment in wild Murray cod. From electrofishing to tracking fish with tags and even underwater security cameras, a range of methods have been used to increase our understanding of Murray cod spawning and recruitment and what we can do to improve this. Q: IF YOU LOSE A FISH AND THE HOOK REMAINS IN THE FISH, WILL IT SURVIVE? Wendy E-mail A: There are quite a lot of variables such as where the fish was hooked, mouth or stomach, the type and make of hook, stainless versus bronze, J, circle, gang or treble, how much line is trailing from the fish that could reduce survival. From experience, if a fish has been hooked in the mouth with minimal line trailing it can have a high probability, up to 90 per cent in some studies of survival. Gut hooked fish this percentage drops considerably, a good reason to use circle hooks as they are designed to have less impact on the fish and better hook holding power for the fisher.
