Fishing World recently reviewed the new Oceanworx Airier 4.8. The Airier was the debut model from Sydney-based and built Oceanworx. It’s a premium, lightweight aluminium boat with a long list of great features. You can read more about the Airier in the August edition of Fishing World. At the time of reviewing the Airier, Derek Rodway and his son Samson mentioned the soon-to-be released Squadron range. ARK Smart Connector ARK has introduced the world’s first 12 pin vehicle socket that automatically checks the trailer lighting electrical system on any trailer connected to the tow vehicle and can warn the user if there is an issue with lighting on the trailer. The new Smart Connector automatically runs a diagnostic on the trailer as soon as the trailer plug is connected. Within 20 seconds it will check and activate the lights on the trailer in sequence giving the user enough time to do a visual check on the trailer lights if they wish to do so. CATCHING a trophy flathead is a memorable moment for many Aussie anglers. FISHERIES Queensland is collaborating with Biopixel Oceans Foundation and James Cook University to undertake research into depredation. This occurs when a predator completely or partially consumes fish caught in fishing apparatus before it can be landed. Researchers are working with fishers to determine the extent of depredation, as well as which species are involved. A COLLABORATIVE new research project will bring together fisheries experts from across Australia and abroad to work jointly on re-establishing wild populations of the endangered native Macquarie perch. Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Murray Watt officially announced the $3.7 million project at SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium, which will drive collaboration of governments, university researchers and recreational fishers. The three-year project will conduct dedicated research to “crack the code” on captive breeding of the species, meaning fisheries experts will be able to produce and release Macquarie perch using hatchery broodstock, rather than capturing wild adult fish every season. THE South Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) has become the fifth state or territory to ban opera house yabby nets for both recreational and commercial use, from July1, 2023. Horror stories featuring photos of dead platypus and water rats (rakali) led to the traps being made illegal or have their use restricted in the ACT, Victoria, Tasmania, NSW and Queensland over the last few years. The nets also trap and drown turtles. Net exchange plans were introduced in NSW when it made the call but SA anglers are worried that there doesn’t seem to be an equivalent plan in SA, which potentially means more waste product going into landfill and users having to buy more environmentally friendly replacements. The Gulf of Carpentaria is one of the most remote sections of coastline in Australia. There are few towns on the western side of Cape York, and if you have watched the documentary on Netflix called “The Cape”, you will get an insight into some of the people who live in this wild and remote part of Queensland. Unlike most coastlines of Australia, the Gulf of Carpentaria is very shallow, rarely reaching depths of over forty metres. It is fertile water, the epicentre of prawn trawling in Queensland.
