THE BACKSTORY The annual Milan Furniture Fair, better known as Salone, is a time when top brands pull out the big guns by revealing the collections that will make their way to showrooms in the months to follow. In recent years, however, the event has also become a showcase for said brands to dazzle visitors with their ingenuity with one-of-a-kind installations and items that aren’t likely to be reproduced. 2. When the team at Hollander Design was tapped to overhaul the three-and-a-half acres of gardens at a Hobe Sound residence on Jupiter Island, the lead on the project knew exactly what was needed. “The existing landscape had little relationship to the architecture, which made it feel disjointed, as the outdoor spaces did not feel like part of the home,” says Geoffrey Valentino, a partner and studio director at Hollander. “Our intent was to make outdoor living effortless by enhancing the connection between the landscape and the home through a series of exterior rooms and garden spaces.” The landscape design firm (which is based in New York and Chicago but works regularly in Florida) began the project the way it always does—by identifying what it calls the “three ecologies” of the…

As previously noted in this space, my family spent nearly 30 years living in Miami. When it was time to “right-size” our home as empty nesters, my wife and I decided West Palm Beach was a logical choice for its residential options, size of city, and cultural activities. “WE FELL IN LOVE with this house the moment we walked in the door. It was special, beautiful, and it had a story,” says retired attorney Fred Tanne about his 1930s Mediterranean Revival residence in West Palm Beach’s historic El Cid neighborhood.
