Although there are heat advisories in place as I write this, we find ourselves in a rather autumnal frame of mind here at Florida Design. With showrooms in Naples and Palm Beach, Cocoon Gallery has been delighting lovers of custom design all over the state for decades, so when a new collection starts generating talk, aesthetes’ ears perk up. This fall, the buzz is all about the gallery’s new handcrafted console collection, a selection of tables made from sustainably sourced acacia wood and named after deities from Indonesian mythology. “The new line combines an organic look and incorporates clean lines and minimalism,” says Cocoon owner Mitchell Siegel. “They are a migration to a more artistic, contemporary look that mixes organic shapes with classical elements.” Inspired by Japanese aesthetics, the pieces combine interpretations of natural elements (such as river rocks) with geometric motifs to form eclectic silhouettes. At 289 feet and backdropped by the city’s gleaming skyscrapers, it’s difficult to imagine Biscayne Boulevard’s Freedom Tower was once Miami’s tallest building. But that was indeed the case back in 1925, when the structure opened as the headquarters of the city’s first newspaper (The Miami News), as well as a symbol of ambition and growth in a town that was not yet 30 years old. When he began the process of building his family home from scratch a couple of years ago, Miami architect Tom Diverio was armed with the enviable knowledge gained after executing some 300-plus design projects. He knew exactly what he wanted and how he wanted it done, so his check off list was long. First was selecting a location for the new structure. “We have two young children, so my wife and I knew the area we wanted to be in, but tracking down the right size lot was not easy,” says Diverio.
