As I write this, information about Art Basel Miami Beach and Miami Art Week is arriving in our inboxes on (what seems like) an hourly basis, and plans for those seven days are being worked out. If you live in South Florida, you may have noticed the colorful banners on light poles announcing the many satellite fairs that take place every December in Miami, Wynwood, and South Beach. There’s an interesting story behind the name of At Five, a fast-expanding lighting purveyor. Per the company’s founder and creative director, Rod Ruiz, 5 p.m. is when daylight begins to shift and transform the mood of a space, preparing it for evening. The nuances of light may be up for debate, but what’s certain is the high caliber of the brands At Five offers. Among these is Ay Illuminate and its designs inspired by global cultural traditions; Grupa, which focuses on minimalist fixtures; and Zero, a Swedish brand that celebrates “timeless aesthetics” via products that champion local production. “With each detail, we aim to create an experience that harmonizes artistry with intention,” says Ruiz. “Our mission is [to provide] access to high-design lighting solutions that elevate interiors and inspire creativity.”…

One of the biggest challenges designers and architects face when working with ecoconscious homeowners is finding reliable vendors and resources to deliver genuine environmentally friendly design. Naples-based interior designers Fadia Bechara and Kira Krümm are hoping to change all that with Biohous, a new resource for home furnishings and accessories that deliver on both style and carbon footprint. PÉREZ ART MUSEUM MIAMI Miami-based twins Elliot and Erick Jiménez drop us into the Santeria religion with El Monte (through February 8, 2026), an exhibition that showcases the blending of influences that is common to their work. ON A LIGHT-FILLED CORNER of Alys Beach, steps from the highly Instagrammed Turtle Bale Pedestrian Path, stands a home that feels at once retro and entirely of the moment. The new residence is a collaboration between architect Cameron Hughes and interior designer Catherine Christie-Zanghi, both of Chancey Architecture & Interior Design in Tampa. Their efforts yielded a custom home that distills the community’s crisp white aesthetic through a more cosmopolitan lens: a touch of St. Tropez, a whisper of the 1970s, and a whole lot of personality. If all works out as it should, this issue of Florida Design will hit newsstands just in time for the start of the new year. If 2025 was marked by caution and concern over project costs and outcomes, I believe that 2026 may usher in a return to optimism. The past five years have propelled the Florida market forward in ways not seen in the previous 20. Internal migration has been a key driver for markets like Martin County, Clearwater, and Naples. International investments in Miami, West Palm Beach, and Orlando continue to transform these growing cities. Although Tomaso Albertini has been living in Naples for two years, his artistic sensibilities keep him in a New York state of mind. After all, it was in Manhattan where the idea of creating colorful swirling compositions from triangular pieces of cardboard first came to him. Collecting this all-important building block for his multidimensional paintings was a snap because the recycling bins outside the bodegas that proliferate NYC and its boroughs were virtually everywhere. “So many galleries ask me to move to another medium, but I cannot; cardboard is an essential part of my background,” he says. “The material is super personal for me because no one else is using it the same way I am.” In Albertini’s hands, cardboard is molded into three-dimensional sculptures that he then paints as…

AVRA JAIN and Danié Gomez-Ortigoza live a colorful life in Miami—both literally and figuratively. A Mexican American multimedia artist, Gomez-Ortigoza’s perceptive and worldly eye shapes her artistic pursuits, including her ongoing series Journey of a Braid, a project with rituals exploring hair as a social construct. WHEN LAWRENCE AND LINDA REEVE moved to Vero Beach from Miami in 1986, it was primarily so they’d have a home dock where they could park their boat after spending months at sea. Access to the Fort Pierce Inlet was vital in preparing for those trips, which became an annual routine with their daughter, whom they schooled onboard as they sailed through the Caribbean and up the East Coast to Maine and Canada.
