On Via San Gregorio Armeno, every day is Christmas Day. The narrow Neapolitan side street, just down the road from the city’s stonking great cathedral, is where traditional presepe (nativity) figurines have been created in small, family-run workshops since the 13th century.
Somewhere along the line, the wise men, cherubs and donkeys found themselves jostling for space in the crib with contemporary figures (corrupt politicians, usually). And, this being Naples, it wasn’t too long before footballers started sneaking into this most sacred of scenes.
