When the topic of Spanish derbies is raised, El Clasico quickly comes to mind. Head to Andalucia instead, where Sevilla meet city neighbours Real Betis, and you’ll see plenty of passion, an incredible match atmosphere and, sadly, the odd bit of violence, too.
Reasons for aggro
Much of the antagonism in El Derbi Sevillano surrounds the clubs’ creation. Founded as one team in 1905, Sevilla and Betis became two after a boardroom disagreement. Tensions have been high ever since. Sevilla hold the better derby record, as well as lifting more trophies.
