On the surface, Canadians Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka seemed like the perfect pair – the handsome bookkeeper newly wedded to the bubbly veterinarian-to-be. But in January 1993, a severely beaten Homolka would arrive on the doorstep of an Ontario police station to accuse her husband of killing two missing schoolgirls. Worse yet, she feared she would be next.
The case became a national obsession, especially when lurid details emerged connecting Homolka to the abduction, rape, torture and death of those girls – Leslie Mahaffy, 14, whose dismembered body was dumped in a lake, and Kristen French, 15.
