The song – a letter written from the perspective of an incarcerated man named Joe – even spawned an annual cultural moment known as ‘Gravy Day’ on December 21, the date of Joe’s letter. Kelly had no idea his track about an inmate missing Christmas with his family and sharing his gravy recipe would resonate so strongly with people. “It was a song that doesn’t have a chorus, it’s set in prison, so I never thought it would be a hit,” the iconic musician has previously said.
