ALBUM OF THE MONTH Khruangbin The Universe Smiles Upon You Night Time Stories Texas based trio Khruangbin have quickly made a name for themselves with their deliciously dreamy and psychedelic groove-laden guitar sound. Having first appeared with a track on Bonobo’s Late Night Tales compilation in 2013, the band were promptly signed up to LNT offshoot Late Night Stories and have subsequently released two well-received EPs. The band, comprised of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar and Donald ‘DJ’ Johnson on drums, now drop their debut LP, The Universe Smiles Upon You. Basic Warping In Ableton Live Taking a few moments to warp a track makes it easy to edit it up in a flash. Here’s how to do it in the DJs’ favourite DAW, Ableton Live If you’re unfamiliar with Ableton Live’s approach to warping tracks to fit the project tempo, it might look intimidatingly complex, but in reality it’s a very straightforward system that’s extremely quick to use once you’ve got the hang of it. In the following tutorial we’ll show you how to warp up a track in three simple steps. This is useful because it means, once a track is slaved to Live’s project tempo, we can adjust the tempo and pitch of the track independently, and can quickly select specific bars and edit them as we see…

DOS & DON’TS DO… try out unusual combinations of material – as long as the music fits together, the more sophisticated audience loves surprising juxtapositions of styles. Re-editing familiar tracks into unusual new arrangements can help re-invigorate them too. DON’T… go overboard on the processing. If you’re using already mastered tracks they almost certainly don’t require further gain reduction. EQ can be useful to help two tracks sit together in a mashup, but won’t usually be necessary otherwise unless you’re working with a particularly poor or vintage recording. DO… make your intros as DJ friendly as possible. That don’t have to be ridiculously long and beat-centric, but a few clues to a track’s tempo during its intro can make all the difference in a stressful mixing situation. DON’T… layer two…

Enhancing A Kick Drum In Ableton Live If only the biggest and baddest beats will do for your re-edits, you’ll need to do a little surgical drum replacement. Luckily that’s easier than it sounds > Load the Edit.als project up in Live, and put Voxengo’s excellent spectral analyser SPAN (a free download from www.voxengo.com ) on the master buss. Analogue Drums Creation Could you give me some general tips for creating analogue-style drums within my DAW? Any plug-in synth that has white noise on offer and a self-oscillating resonant filter can do this. The principles involved are exactly the same as making drums on any analogue synth. Use the self-oscillating resonance from a resonant LPF for your kick, using the cutoff to pitch the kick sound and use white noise for your hats and snare, fed through resonant filters. These basic sounds can then be sculpted using envelopes and EQ to make them sound more drum-like. Re-Edit A Warped Track In Ableton Live Once you’ve warped your track you can re-arrange and tweak it to your heart’s content. Here’s how to get smooth-sounding edits… > If you haven’t completed the previous tutorial already, load up WIP edit.als to get up to speed. What software helped you most during the mixing phase? Tassilo: “We loved using iZotope’s Alloy 2, which is on virtually every track on the album. It’s a great channel strip that we use for all kinds of sound modelling. Apart from that, I also have almost all of the UAD plug-ins, including the Ocean Way studio stuff, which was also important in the mixing process. For sound creation, we used Spectrasonics Omnisphere a lot because it’s a great sample-based synthesizer, so a lot of our sound textures were created with that one. ULTIMATE EDITS Creating custom DJ re-edits, remixes and mashups is a snap thanks to the tempo-detection capabilities in most DAWs. Let’s cut and paste Since Dance music records have existed, DJs have been on the lookout for new ways to present them. We’ve come a long way from the rough-fingered, tape-splicing dons of ’70s Disco: today’s DAWs make it possible to throw together your own unique edits in minutes or even seconds! So, what is a re-edit? In its purest form it’s a version of a track that has had its arrangement altered in some way, for example by extending a track’s percussive intro section so that it’s easier to mix. This can be achieved by copying and pasting the relevant part of the track – a simple enough task…

The Cutting Edge There are several other applications that make your life easier working with re-edits. Mixed In Key ($58, www.mixedinkey.com) helps DJs determine which tracks will work together by analysing their harmonic content and key. A chart is provided that shows which keys work together, which rules out a large portion of your material base and helps you find a suitable mashup candidate more quickly. Also from Mixed In Key is Flow ($58, www.flowdj.com), a DJing application with baked-in harmonic analysis and the ability to use Native Instruments’ Stems format. DIY Acapellas In Ableton Live If you have both a vocal and instrumental version of a track, it’s possible to create your own DIY acapella with a little phase cancellation… The simplest way to create a DIY acapella requires you have both the full vocal and instrumental versions in your possession. The theory is that the only difference between these versions will be the vocal. Therefore, inverting the polarity of one of the tracks’ waveforms will cause everything apart from the vocal to disappear thanks to the magic of destructive interference. Unfortunately, there will often be subtle differences between the vocal and instrumental versions, and they may have received different treatment at the mixing, mastering and encoding stages, further complicating matters. Warping Acapellas In Ableton Live Warping acapellas in Live can be much trickier than warping a full mix, but here’s a cunning trick to ease your frustration… Making a re-edit of a track that varies in tempo can be a frustrating task, and there are many reasons why a track might have fluctuating timing: it might not be sequenced or played to a click track, or it may be recorded via equipment that hasn’t maintained a perfectly stable rate of recording. If the audio has been ripped from vinyl, this is another point at which timing fluctuations can appear. That’s the challenge stalwart UK producer Hauswerks faced when given the opportunity to rework Groove Armada’s classic I See You Baby (it was originally made famous by a Fatboy Slim remix) for their recent Little Black Book compilation. FM visited him in his Leeds studio to find out how the track came together. “Sometimes I purposely leave the clicks on the end of audio files, or the crackle, because I think it just gives it character. Obviously that sometimes just sounds massively wrong, but if you judge it right I…

Has your working process changed a lot over the years? Tassilo: “Yeah, there is a huge difference. When we did Pan-O-Rama eight years ago we both worked in one studio together in the Mobilee office. We had a Dell PC and worked on Cubase, but everything was done in the box with software. Now my studio has an analogue mixer and we also have a lot of outboard equipment that we can use for analogue summing, some nice preamps, mastering EQs and compressors. So it’s way more gear-loaded than it used to be and the music’s treated way better. We still use a PC, but a far more powerful one than any Mac you can get.”…

Multi-Functional Mayhem The Abstract Data Octocontroller might well be the module that transforms your set-up, or provides the modulation backbone for a new one The Octocontroller is an absolute mammoth of control, modulation and utilities. It has eight outputs that can be made to output up to 12 different types of signals, from LFOs to arpeggiated patterns, to gates and more. We asked Justin Owen from Abstract Data how the design came about and he explained: “When I first got into modular synths, one of the things I noticed very quickly was that getting multiple modulation sources to sync was quite difficult.” Speaking from experience, that isn’t just difficult, it’s a real inspiration killer! Paul usually sends something that he thinks I may be able to build something from – it could be a fairly finished track that would be ready to play in a club, then he’ll see if there’s any inspiration to do a vocal. Otherwise, I’ll do something at home using a basic kick drum, guitar chords and some pads and send them over to Paul who will run with it for a while here – then it all meets in this thing called Dropbox. Let’s see how the Fixed Length function can be used to capture the perfect take Ableton’s Jesse Terry offers a handy tip for using the Fixed Length function when recording ideas into a new clip. “I generally keep this off, but there is a cool trick when making a long recording. With Fixed Length off, press record, and start playing and working on a riff – I generally practise with Record on, and once I feel I’ve got it right, I press the Fixed Length button, which ends the recording and loops the last few measures of the long recording (depending on the Fixed Length setting). FX, Looper And Connectivity The Reface DX has some great effects onboard, much like its Reface brothers. However, there are two effect units available at once here, surpassing the other models. Effect types include distortion, touch wah, chorus, flanger, phaser, delay and reverb so there’s plenty to radically alter the dry tones. Importantly, these effects sound excellent and really enhance the already great-sounding new DX engine, plus you can tweak the effects in real time using the touch faders to spice up live performances.
