“The studio was State of Art in an industrial unit in Easton, Bristol. It was pretty rough round the edges, with carpet on the walls, low ceilings… not what you’d imagine a studio to look like, but it had a good vibe. “All the beats were made by Specify, using his MPC 2000. Then it all went to 2-inch tape, sync’d with a SMPTE/MTC unit. It was always transferred to second-hand reels, as no one involved could afford new tape! As one track was striped with code we had 23 tracks to play with, so we’d usually have to bounce more than one sound to a track, EQing or compressing before hitting tape if necessary.
