Any speckled trout will slurp a passing shrimp, but large trout normally want baitfish. Lunker specks might only eat once a day, so they want something substantial.
“Croakers are natural prey for trout,” says Capt. Ronnie Daniels (msfisherman.com) of Pass Christian, Miss. “To target the giants, I hook a 5- to 6-incher through the tail, right above its anal fin.” When going for numbers, however, he scales down to 2- to 3-inch croakers.
Daniels recommends a modified Carolina rig, in which you attach the main line to an in-line chatter weight (a cylinder filled with rattles resembling shotgun pellets), then attach a fluorocarbon leader (20-to 30-pound, depending on water clarity) with a 1/0 or 2/0 Kahle hook on the other end.
