FRONT-YARD FANTASY
If you have a small lot, why hand it over to a ho-hum, single-color monoculture (we’re looking at you, turfgrass!)? Instead, create a foliar-and-flower fantasy like this with drifts of perennials and small shrubs. Mix tall plants with creepers to create an undulating, natural look. A multispecies front yard offers a tapestry of seasonal color changes. To enjoy nonstop color in your yard, plant a mix of spring-, summer-, and fall-flowering perennials. Flowering shrubs, such as spirea (Spiraea spp. and hybrids) or hardy hibiscus (Hibiscus moscheutos), serve as anchor plantings.
