What it looks like There are a number of species of fleabanes. They all have numerous asterlike rays of typically white to pinkish petals (up to 1 inch in diameter) surrounding flat yellow disks. Common, or Philadelphia, fleabane blooms in spring. Spatula-shaped leaves clasp the stems, which reach about 30 inches in height.
Where to find it A wildflower native to almost all parts of the United States and Canada, common fleabane is a perennial and prefers moist, disturbed areas, but it is not particular and tolerates clay. It occurs in roadside ditches, edges of marshes, fallow fields, open woods and vacant lots.
