So here we are: new year, new decade, new geo-political landscape. Wherever you’re reading this, it shouldn’t have gone unnoticed that some things have changed in the last couple of months. Not least in the UK. Scottish gin brand Porter’s has launched in its 11th export market as its products went on sale in America. Working with New York City-based import and distribution partner, Domaine Select Wine and Spirits, the company will bring its Modern Classic and Tropical Old Tom gins to the on-trade and off-trade markets in the US. The brand has already enjoyed international success since its launch in 2016, distributing to territories including China and France. The founders of Porter’s, Ben Iravani, Alex Lawrence and Josh Rennie, began making gin after turning the basement of their bar in Aberdeen into a micro-distillery. The maker of Gin 1689 has announced a pink addition to its range - the first pink gin from a Dutch distiller. The Queen Mary Edition is designed to reflect the creation of the world’s first pink gin, made in the 17th century after mixing the spirit with bruised strawberries and raspberries. Alexander Janssens and Patrick van der Peet, founders of the Amsterdam Craft Gin Company, based Gin 1689 on a recipe from the time of King William III and Queen Mary II which was discovered in the British Library archives. Like the original expression, the Queen Mary Edition is a classic gin with botanicals such as dried quince, lemon and orange peel, nutmeg, aniseed and clove. What I’m about to say probably amounts to heresy in Gin Magazine, but I would like, for a moment, to talk about vodka. The beginning of the year is home to Veganuary, an event that encourages people to try a vegan diet for a month. As part of this, an increasing number of food outlets have been creating vegan-friendly versions of popular dishes, whether that’s a Gregg’s sausage roll or Subway’s “Meatless Meatball Marinara” sub. We all know that water is essential to gin making. Without it, there is no spirit. With this in mind, you would think Bombay Sapphire hit the jackpot when it snapped up Laverstoke Mill, its Hampshire home on the banks of the River Test. However, the water which flows through its rural site doesn’t go into its gin. Notwithstanding the effect it would have on the poor old river to take out thousands of litres of water a day, the company wanted to reduce its carbon footprint by transporting the neat spirit closer to its bottling plant in Scotland to be diluted, saving space and weight in its lorries. One of the most prominent signs that gin was finally taking off in travel retail was the muchpublicised opening of the first airport gin microdistillery in 2016, The Nicholas Culpeper at London Gatwick’s North Terminal. Now it is the turn of the cruise ship world, which is set to boast its own floating distillery when P&O Cruises’ new 5,200-passenger Iona, the largest in the company’s history, embarks on its maiden voyage in May this year. The Devon-based Salcombe Distillery is set to install a working distillery on the ship, which will produce an exclusive gin to be served in the vessel’s onboard bars, restaurants and duty-free stores.
