If you take the N12 from Joburg to the Kruger National Park, at first you’ll see only mine dumps and power stations (White elephants, much? – Eds.), surrounded by grassy plains and maize fields. Numerous trucks slowing down the traffic. Polluted air. The highway becomes the N4 and Witbank, Middelburg, Belfast flash past… then, just before the road starts to descend to the Lowveld, things change.
Ah, this is where the Golden Egg restaurant used to be, the best breakfast stop on earth (if you hadn’t packed padkos). The Golden Egg might be gone, but the towns of Machadodorp, Waterval Boven and Waterval Onder are still there, next to the highway. And next to the cool waters of the Elands River.
