Jonno Sherwin, CEO of a Cape Town company, is a man with big muscles and a heart to match. Together with partner Dr Johan Hugo, an infectious diseases physician, Jonno owns and runs the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary, a non-profit haven for abandoned, neglected and abused donkeys and horses, on the outskirts of Prince Albert in the Karoo. With the help of volunteers and veterinarians, the latter mostly working free of charge, they run the sanctuary with a healthy mix of pragmatism and compassion.
