“Farmers around here don’t make jam – it’s just not done,” says Ernst Marais. The momentary mischievous look on his face disguises the worry lines that come with being a farmer in these parts, in times of drought. Stellenbosch wine estate Tokara made history when its Reserve Collection Elgin Sauvignon Blanc 2020 won the Dubourdieu trophy for the Best Sauvignon Blanc of the Competition at the 12th Concours Mondial du Sauvignon in Brussels. It is the first South African wine to win this coveted title. The judging panel tasted more than 1 200 wines over four days, and South Africa won a further 11 gold and 9 silver medals.
