FAMILY MATTERS
Ornithologists have long treated babblers as a sort of taxonomic rubbish bin, dumping any species of uncertain affinity into the babbler family. With the rise of DNA analysis, however, we’ve started recycling some enigmatic birds into other families.
The babblers are a predominantly Asian group. Of the 145 species, only 21 call Africa home, and only five make it down to southern Africa. In Mzanzi, we have two species: the arrow-marked babbler, so-named for the white, arrow-shaped plumage on its breast; and the southern pied babbler (pictured above). These two are usually separated by their different habitat preferences, but where they overlap, chaos often ensues.
