by David Muirhead, Struik Nature I couldn’t help but smile when David Muirhead’s new book landed on my desk. His previous book, The Bedside Ark – A riotous assembly of unrespectable creatures (2016), was great fun to read and full of interesting facts.
This new book, subtitled Animal myths, musings and matters of fact , features short essays about 38 diverse creatures: the firefly, springhare, leopard, gorilla, coelacanth and many more. As in the previous book, there are wonderful illustrations by Patricia de Villiers.
Muirhead wonders why killer whales, despite their name, hardly ever actually kill humans. His answer: “They see us as kindred spirits, or at least as useful idiots.”
