Born to Scottish parents near Leeds in Yorkshire in 1870, Alexander ‘Alister’ MacKenzie led a fascinating life long before his passion for golf course design became his career and lasting legacy to the game.
He graduated from Cambridge University and Leeds University with degrees in chemistry, medicine and natural science, before joining his father, William, in his medical practice despite training as a surgeon. He was nearly 30 when he was called away to serve in the Boer War where, ironically, it was the concealed Boer trenches that nurtured his first ideas that would one day so heavily influence his course designs.
