Ernie Els’ thrilling 2002 Open Championship play-off victory at Muirfield was always going to be a hard act to follow, but the 84th U.S. PGA Championship contested a few weeks later delivered, albeit with an unlikely cast.
Rich Beem, Justin Leonard, Fred Funk and Tiger Woods made up the final two groups on Sunday, and provided a rousing finale which, along with the Open, more than made up for the drama-less first two majors of that year.
