Congratulations where congratulations are due. Greg Norman and his team at LIV Golf put on a great show in Adelaide. Don’t mind that there appeared to be more beer spilled than what was consumed, by shoe or can, over the three days. The course was beautifully set up for entertaining golf and that’s what we got. Talor Gooch was phenomenal over the first two days and when he got the chicken bone caught in his throat with nine holes to play, it thankfully made for a far more exciting finish than if he kept his 10-shot advantage. How many times have you heard, or been told by a playing partner, to keep your head down after you have duffed a shot? Unfortunately, it’s more likely the cause of your mis-hit was not your head but a common fault that hits in the split second before impact. It is a swing fault known as early extension, which usually gets confused with lifting the head as they come through to hit the ball. Early extension occurs when your hips move incorrectly through impact. Instead of rotating left (for right-handers) and around, your hips slide forward and upwards forcing them towards your golf ball and the target. Divots can reveal many things. For example, the size and depth of the divot will help you better understand your angle of attack down into the ball. A deep gouged out divot is the result of steep attack angle, whereas a shallow divot means the clubhead moved through impact closer to the ground for longer. The 44th Ryder Cup matches will be played in Rome, Italy, for the first time in the history of the storied event, and you could be there to witness the greatest team event in golf. Athlea Archer is a golfing icon in Western Victoria and, despite turning 90 years old this month, she continues to inspire. Athlea’s competitive record speaks for itself. She had a dozen club championship victories across five decades and claimed her 12th and final title at the age of 76. First of all, I have to say I’m a “PGA Tour guy.” But that doesn’t mean I didn’t derive some pleasure from the recent LIV Golf event in Adelaide. If your golf game typically sees you hit 50 percent, or less, of your iron shots out of the middle of the clubface, here are two swing thoughts that will get you hitting the sweetspot more often. The first thought is to lean the shaft forward at address, which reminds you to position your hands a little ahead of the ball, not directly in line with the ball. This is the position you will be aiming for at impact… that’s what makes good impact. The clubhead, with hands slightly ahead, hits the ball and continues moving forward and down through impact. If you’re one of the many golfers who regularly hit it ‘fat’ or ‘thin’, the two disaster shots for chipping, here is a drill that will encourage a better strike on those short shots. Set up to play a chip shot with your back directly facing the sun and a golf ball placed on the ground in the shadow created by your head. You can call this your clown’s nose. Now the key to this drill is make your chip swings while keeping your ‘nose’ in the shadow. The only time your ‘nose’ should come out of the shadow into the light is when you finish your follow-through.
