An insult to the profession
Andy Hall’s email in May’s edition about the role of caddies, which referred to them as purely “bag carriers”, was, to be perfectly honest, rude and wide of the mark. There are many sports where you have the main character, ably assisted by an assistant. Boxers and their trainers, tennis players and their coaches and so on.
Caddying is a profession in itself and they should be recognised for their worth to the player while on the course and off it. They are not just bag carriers, they are the on-course voice of reason, trusted adviser, mentor, encourager and critical friend who knows how and when to speak to their professional golfer.
