Hit your comfortable club 1 First, get a clear idea of what you want to do on a hole. This fairway has ditches and trees both right and left, before turning right and up to the green. It’s not long at around 320 yards, so you may not need your longest club to hit it far enough to make the corner and see the green. But on every hole, you should be leaning towards your most comfortable club anyway – the one with which you are most confident of finding the fairway – because golf is much simpler from the short grass, even if you can’t then reach the green in regulation. Driving 1 Create yourown target Hitting towards a target on the range is not a bad use of your time, but we can be more focused than that. Knowing that the average fairway in the UK is about 35 yards wide, I will pick a target on the range that’s narrower – about 20 yards. Before playing the shot, I would recommend assessing the task in hand by positioning yourself midway between the ball and the hole, allowing you sight of the base of the flag, which is often obscured. A common fault is to overhit this kind of chip due to its flatter trajectory and increased roll. This can happen with any driver, but CT levels are limited by the game’s governing bodies, with regular testing on the major professional tours around the world. 1 Chipper High-handicappers will often waste shots with lots of duffed and thinned chips. The first club I recommend for these players is a chipper. The wider, softly contoured sole is there to provide more margin for error in the strike, while the upright lie angle allows you to treat these shots more like a putt with loft, simplifying the technique and reducing the requirement for precision. 1 Bunker play issues One of the biggest issues for many women golfers is bunker play, often due to an almost paralysing fear of failure. This kills any sort of acceleration through the ball, which you need to play the shot well. I would recommend a practice swing before even entering the bunker. Really rehearse a solid contact with the grass outside the bunker, leading into a full finish. Then, pick a spot in the middle of the green, commit to the shot with plenty of speed and make sure to take some sand just before the ball. 1 Are you improving? As you improve in golf, your equipment should follow your trajectory. Beginners should be looking at a relatively cost-effective option as they decide whether golf is for them. 1 Pick a small target A tight drive with trouble on both sides fills most golfers with dread. In this situation, it’s important to shift your focus to one thought only… find the fairway. To help you do so, pick out a small target point beyond the fairway or on the horizon, and then take dead aim on that exact spot. Work hard on really aiming at, and hitting it on, that line. Even if you miss, by focusing on a very small target, you’ll probably still end up on the fairway. Remember: think small, aim small, miss small.
