DAILY CLEAN THEIR TEETH
Brushing pets’ teeth doesn’t just keep bad breath at bay; periodontal disease can be debilitating. Ideally, you should brush their teeth daily starting when they’re babies, says Heidi Cooley, D.V.M., of Banfield Pet Hospital. If brushing that often isn’t feasible, ask your vet to recommend dental diets, treats, toys or other ways to mitigate plaque between brushings. If your pet’s gums are red and swollen, visit the vet.

Some dogs with floppy ears, curly fur or allergies are prone to infection and should get their ears inspected more often, but all need their ears checked at least weekly.
