Creative, cosmopolitan and genuinely welcoming, Manchester marches to the beat of its own drum. Today, the city that gave birth to the computer, socialism and votes for women, teems with cultural and historic gems, world-class restaurants and, of course, a legendary music scene.
Culture begins at Manchester Art Gallery, which houses an extensive collection of British and European art by the likes of Cézanne, Renoir, Turner and Lowry. For those short on time, the gallery runs free hour-long tours from Thursday to Sunday. Further south, emerging from a sprawling urban park, the Whitworth Art Gallery displays a magnificent selection of work by contemporary artists, including Degas, Picasso, Freud and Hockney. It also plays host to the Art Garden, created by celebrated landscape designer, Sarah Price.
