Upfront North Piha Beach, just west of Auckland, is one of New Zealand's most dangerous – and one of its most beautiful – surf beaches. Aucklandbased architectural practice Crosson Architects were tasked with designing a functional yet low-maintenance lifeguard tower. The brief was for a robust structure, simultaneously a beacon of safety for beachgoers and a protective retreat for vigilant lifeguards. Unimpeded visibility was a must, as was careful consideration of the remote and fragile coastal setting. Curved concrete sections were factory-made and assembled on site to minimise dune and planting disturbance, and North Piha's naturally charcoal sand palette is mirrored in the structure so as to blend into its surroundings. New windows and doors aid cross ventilation, while new openings introduce much-needed natural light within the home. The floor of the extension introduces a new layer of thermal mass, while remediation works to the existing terrace house are layered in thermal and acoustic insulation to make the home more comfortable all year round. Houses Sited within the bustling heart of Fortitude Valley in Brisbane, this house was designed as a contemporary place of refuge in an unconventional urban fabric. Renowned Queensland architect James Russell originally designed the house for his family before Heath Williams bought it in 2021. With a background in interior design and an interest in architecturally-designed homes, Heath's project brief consisted of a series of small-scale interventions to make this house his home. See the Forest is the 2021 instalment of Albury City Council's annual architecture pavilion initiative, Summer Place Pavilion. The curved, organic structure (made from bushfire-salvaged timber cladding) contrasts with the sharp right angles of QEII Square, the main civic space in Albury in which it is settled. In designing the pavilion, Carly Martin of Akimbo Architecture wanted to bring her special summer place — the shores of the mighty Murray River — into the city.
