Prefabrication, either as part of a home or its entirety, is offering both practical and economic solutions for a growing number of builds. We look at five homes and studios that are built using prefabricated elements or delivered fully formed to site. To orientate the living areas of the house to the north and maintain privacy, a landscaping strategy in the form of the ha ha was employed in order to flip the standard layout of a suburban block and bring the backyard to the front yard of the site. What I like about you Architect: Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen I visited Helsinki in 2015 and for me, the most profound moment was experiencing the Temppeliaukio Church (Church of the Rock). Designed by brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen after winning a design competition in 1961, the site is a large outcrop of rock in the heart of the city. Their radical scheme proposed to carve the church into the rock, creating a circular plan and dome in section. Large concrete beams span from the natural rock walls and support a copper-domed roof. ADDITION OUT BACK Degree is a stand-alone addition to a Melbourne terrace house created as a modern, sustainable prefabricated structure. The new addition consists of a double-height kitchen, dining and living space with a laundry and bathroom, while a bedroom and ensuite fit snugly onto a mezzanine level. This panelised building was designed to passive house standards with a super-insulated, airtight envelope and has provided increased energy efficiency for the client's growing family. If you're growing turmeric, whether in black plastic pots or greenhouses if you're in a cool climate or under trees if you're in the subtropics or tropics, it's time to harvest. You'll know if it's ready as the leaves and stems will have died back to ground level, meaning its energy is returning to the underground parts of the plant. Using a fork, to avoid damaging the precious underground rhizomes, dig deep underneath them and lift them to the surface. Shake off the soil and cut off the stems about 25 millimetres above the rhizomes. Wash the last of the soil off and allow to dry in a shaded, airy spot, preferably in a wicker basket or similar. The Overland Track is rated as one of the best multi-day hikes in Australia and is a major drawcard for tourists from around the world to Tasmania. Upfront Out of a tractor shed tucked into New Zealand's southern alps, Joe Wright of Bearwood designs and hand carves small batch wooden pieces from sustainable and recycled New Zealand and Australian native timber. Each piece has its own unique grain patterns, colours and character. Bearwood's “Black Bird” (Manu pango in Māori) is made from Tasmanian blackwood, with colours ranging from honeyed light brown to a deeper coffee-like hue, often with fine black streaks running through the surface. New Zealand-based 3D printing and additive manufacturing company Special Studio makes homewares and small furniture from recycled plastics, using large format 3D printing. Taking the form of a loosely falling linen sheet, or a crushed piece of paper, their “Lulu Planter” is a cropped version of other pieces in their range; the “Lulu Waste Bin” and the “Lulu Stool”. Gardens With as much garden as there is house, Jimmy's House is just about as perfect as it could be for the Perth climate and the cute old neighbourhood it is in. It gently points to a better way of living that is just as much about the people in the local community as it is about the people who live in the house.
