What is Trump’s master plan? The US president wants to revive the manufacturing sector with a mix of protectionist policies, tax cuts and deregulation. Higher tariffs on foreign imports are supposed to encourage investment by US companies and overseas businesses that want to avoid the tariffs. The cash generated by the tariffs will be the source of funds for tax cuts, unlike Trump’s first administration when tax cuts were funded by extra borrowing. Rightwing groups that bankrolled Trump in 2024 want him to bring down debts, insisting the president work harder to balance the books. Standing amid the ruins of Success, a former sugar plantation in Hanover, rural Jamaica, there is a muted silence, interrupted by the occasional rumble of a vehicle passing, overripe cocoa pods falling to the ground and green iguanas scuttling across dying leaves. On a summer day in Somers, Wisconsin, Dave Giordano heard an unexpected buzzing in his backyard. What he found shocked him – a rusty patched bumblebee nest. The discovery was so rare it made the local news. Once widespread across the mid-west and eastern US, the rusty patched bumblebee has seen its population plunge by nearly 90%, prompting its listing in 2017 as the first federally endangered bumblebee in the US. Whether that pledge will be fulfilled is moot. He will declare victory either way. What the US president offered was not just an economic programme, but an imperial one. On 11 June 1988, I was 12 and sitting with my family watching the Free Nelson Mandela concert on TV. As a clan, we were old hands at trying to free Mandela, having done our fair share of marching and boycotting over the years, and this concert felt like the culmination of all that. HEALTH Shingles jab may cut risk of dementia by 20%, study finds Researchers who tracked dementia cases in Welsh adults have uncovered the strongest evidence yet that the shingles vaccine reduces the risk of developing the brain disease. Health records of more than 280,000 older adults revealed those who received Zostavax from 2013 were 20% less likely to be diagnosed with dementia over the next seven years than those who went without. After accounting for the fact that not all those eligible for the vaccine received it, researchers led by Pascal Geldsetzer of Stanford University found vaccination brought a 20% reduction in dementia risk. FILM A Minecraft Movie Dir. Jared Hess Minecraft, even more than most computer games, is what you make of it, an experience generated by the player. So in a way, the idea of making a film set in the Minecraft world is counterintuitive, as it can never replicate what is good about the game. This comedy-fantasy takes aspects of the Minecraft world and uses them as building blocks in a rollicking adventure, giving Jack Black and Jason Momoa carte blanche to be deeply silly. In 1966 a woman sat down at the Destruction in Art Symposium at London’s Africa Centre and invited people to cut off her clothes. It was an era when Yves Klein used naked women as paintbrushes and Allen Jones made sculptures of fetishistically dressed women posed as furniture.
