MOLLY MILLER’S DANCE card is usually full. When she’s not touring or recording with artists such as Jason Mraz or the Black Eyed Peas, she’s leading her own outfit called — not coincidentally — the Molly Miller Trio. Compression is one of the most useful but also misunderstood forms of processing in the acoustic-electric universe. I’M A BIG fan of 12-string electrics, and I’m a big fan of Stratocasters, but I’ve never been a big fan of 12-string Strats. Until now! Paul McEwen, a veteran of the Nashville guitarslinger scene, is also quite a luthier and inventor. Among the guitar mods he offers at Pull Tone Devices are externally mounted B-benders for guitars and even banjos. WHEN THE BEATLES debuted in the United States on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, they helped launch countless bands across the country. Among them, eventually, was the tandem formed by guitarist Nancy Wilson and her singing sister, Ann: Heart. Although they were female in an era of male-dominated groups, they never gave that fact much thought. ORANGE IS RENO WNED for its robust British tube-amp sound, and the iconic U.K.-based manufacturer continues to make inroads into the acoustic electronics market with the Orange Acoustic Pedal. This design basically takes what Orange accomplished with its complex and compound Acoustic Pre TC preamp and Crush Acoustic 30 amplifier, and boils the essentials down to a straightforward stomp box. The Acoustic Pedal is a single-ended Class A preamp featuring a parametric midrange with notch filter, a balanced XLR output and a buffered effects loop. IT’S NOT SURPRISING that Carl Verheyen’s latest release, Sundial (Cranktone Entertainment), is an adventurous album loaded with world-class guitar playing. That’s a given for this super-picker, who has spent his life as a first-call session player, a solo artist and a long-time member of the British group Supertramp. On Sundial, Verheyen covers everything from rock and ska to funk, Afro-pop and ballads, one of which, “Garfunkel (It Was All Too Real),” is based on a serendipitous event that took place when he was just 15. “I was at a hotel with my parents in Alberta, Canada, when I spotted a grand piano in the lobby and sat down and started playing the intro to ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water,’” Verheyen recalls. “When I got to the big Eb chord, the downbeat…

WITH ITS FUZZY, synth-like octave-up sound, Roger Mayer’s Octavia pedal was one of the most radical guitar effects to emerge in the late 1960s. The pedal was made legendary thanks to its creative use by Jimi Hendrix, but the original device was never commercially produced at the time, existing only as a handful of custom-made units created by its inventor. Mayer’s reluctance to take the pedal into production left the door open for early ’70s imitators like Tycobrahe, a notable copycat who even cadged Mayer’s name for its pedal. IN THE WORLD of rock and pop, the Who have always been, and will likely remain, the kings of the concept album. But while 1969’s Tommy is their most famous, 1971’s abortive Lifehouse their most troubled, and 1973’s Quadrophenia their most ambitious, they were all preceded by an oddity known as The Who Sell Out. Released in 1967, the Who’s third full-length record stands as their first official concept album. This song can be found on Scofield’s 2016 Grammy Award–winning album Country for Old Men, a disc that features a collection of country classics performed in a jazz style.
