The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is a section in the U.S. Justice Department whose sole function is to generate an annual report on crime in the U.S. This gives us a better picture of the threats a private citizen may face. Here are some numbers from the BJS, which you may find alarming.
• In 2006, there were 5,685,620 violent criminal incidents in the country. That’s right, 5.7 million. That’s murder, aggravated assault, robbery, rape and assault.
• In 2011, the aggregate number was up to 5.8 million. That’s one violent criminal incident per every 30 adults.
• According to the BJS, in 2013, 1.1 million Americans suffered at least one violent victimization.
