Beyond the fact that old double shotguns are the only handmade shotguns you can buy for less than $5,000, there are other rewards to owning old shotguns: Most vintage American double guns were so well made they’ve survived for close to a hundred years without requiring a repair. The years 1880–99 found some 500 market hunters working their trade in Currituck County, North Carolina. Baltimore buyers waited on the beach with barrels and ice. One of them bought over 40,000 birds a year, and there were three or four other big buyers in the area. The scene was much the same up and down the coast. The gunners would set up shop at the landing with the day’s kill in sorted piles or hung by the feet to drain. They were bought and packed in flour barrels, awaiting pick-up by steamer for delivery to New York’s restaurants and milliners. The 8mm — or 7.92 — Mauser was the German military rifle cartridge through both World Wars. It was officially adopted in 1888 with a bullet diameter of .318 inch. In 1905, the bullet diameter was increased to .323 inch. In Europe, the 8mm Mauser and several other 8mm cartridges are available in both sizes. The larger size is always designated as “S” or “JS” bore. In the United States, ammunition companies load only the .323-inch diameter or “S” bullet. The 8mm Mauser is widely chambered in European sporting rifles, but American gunmakers have not adopted it to the same extent. The “J” or “I” in the name denotes infantry ammunition. The Thumb Rightly so, there’s a lot of discussion about what you should do with your trigger finger when you’re shooting or not shooting. However, we rarely hear talk about what you should do with your thumb — the thumb on your shooting hand. Its positioning is just as important. If you’re shooting a handgun with a thumb safety, your thumb should be resting on top of the safety while you’re shooting. This circumvents the possibility of the safety being inadvertently engaged. I say resting because thumb pressure can interfere with shot placement. When you holster a handgun with a thumb safety that locks the slide — like on a 1911 or Browning HiPower — your thumb should be under the safety, applying pressure up. This will most likely prevent…
