HISTORICAL NOTES Designed by Charles Newton, the .250 Savage was introduced by the Savage Arms Company as a high-velocity round for the Model 99 lever-action rifle. The original loading used an 87-grain bullet at 3,000 fps muzzle velocity, and Savage named it the .250-3000. One suspects the 87-grain bullet was chosen because it could be safely driven at 3,000 fps with the powders then available. This allowed Savage to introduce it with the ever-so-sexy name, “.250-3000.” Remember, in 1915, when this cartridge was introduced, riflemen were still marveling at cartridges achieving 2,000 fps. Have you ever stopped to think about why the SUV became so popular so quickly? The simple answer is that people wanted to have their cake and eat it, too. A sport utility vehicle emulates the utility features of a truck with the sportiness of a sedan, right? You’ll notice that a good number of monometal bullets feature a polymer tip. Although it certainly helps maintain a uniform ballistic coefficient, the tip also acts a wedge, initiating expansion upon impact. To the best of my knowledge, this feature began with the cup-and-core Nosler Ballistic Tip, taking inspiration from a Norma bullet with a plastic ball at the tip. I’m a fan of the polymer tip, especially where the monometals are concerned. Or, perhaps I should say I’m a fan of any good means of assisting expansion. Copper, along with copper alloys, are tougher than lead.
