I’ve never been a fan of selling guns. Don’t get me wrong: I’ve got nothing against it, and I’ve certainly scored some excellent finds from those willing to sell. However, when a gun makes a stop in one of my safes, it’s gonna stay for a long while. Now, are there guns in the back that deserve more range time than they see? Absolutely. “I Only use the [insert company name here] reloading manual. It has the correct data.” I’ve heard that line only slightly more than the classic, “I got this reliable load data from the internet.” Both statements are skewed—the latter much more than the former—for different reasons. What’s a reloading manual? Is it gospel? And, if so, why is there so much variation between the numerous (supposedly) reliable sources? If a reloading manual isn’t gospel, is one set of data more correct than another? All this confusion can drive a guy crazy, especially when starting out. In 2014, Mossberg invited me on a safari in South Africa, and to be the first to test a new bolt-action rifle. I’m always eager to assess a new hunting rifle; I enjoy it almost as much as being on safari. HISTORICAL NOTES Designed by Winchester in 1925 for its Model 54 bolt-action rifle, the .270 caused quite a stir in shooting circles. At the time of introduction, it offered better long-range performance than any big-game cartridge available on the American market. The cartridge is based on the .30-06 case necked down to .277 inch. The case neck is .050-inch longer but, except for the neck and headstamp, the .270 Winchester is otherwise identical to the .30-06. A rifle that doesn’t hit to the sights isn’t of much use. I saw a lot of those as a gunsmith, and I spent a lot of my time handling that chore for customers. No, really: You’d be surprised how many hunters back then (and for all I know, today) buy a rifle, scope, mount and ammo, and ask, “Can you sight it in for me?” Sometimes, they even have detailed instructions for that outcome: “I want it 2 inches high at 200 yards.” (No idea why that was a common request, but it was. Taylor’s & Company are all about the classics. I sold my first gun article a quarter-century ago while I was still working as a patrol officer. The article was about holstering a handgun. I’m not sure it was all that well written; I think it was partly accepted by the magazine because the topic was one that was important and often overlooked. The thrust of the piece was safety related because negligent, self-inflicted gunshot wounds often occur when holstering. Nothing’s changed. Because shooters often holster too hurriedly with their finger on the trigger, it’s still a problem.
