Gun Dog Magazine is the best magazine for hunting enthusiasts who are owners of retrieving breeds. Each issue is guaranteed to be filled with useful information devoted to you, your dog and the sport of upland bird and waterfowl hunters.
IN THIS ISSUE we’ve followed the advice often attributed to newspaperman Horace Greeley: “Go west, young man, go west,” with the caveat that not all of our writers are either (a) young, or (b) men. Several features focus on western gamebird species, namely chukars, sage grouse and white-tailed ptarmigan. The last was the quarry sought by Kali Parmley on a recent backpacking hunt in the Colorado Rockies with her Lab, Lincoln. This is the second time Kali, the managing editor of Petersen’s HUNTING and WHEELS AFIELD magazines, has appeared in GUN DOG ; her story on hunting sharptails and pheasants in the North Dakota Badlands ran in our November 2016 issue. Alan Liere has been a GUN DOG contributor for—ahem—quite a few years now, as well as our sister publication,…

Apparently there are still some American cocker spaniel folks who believe the breed ought to be able to do what it was intended to do—there are several cockers that are conformation champions with hunt test titles, including Millie, the pretty lady in the attached photo who is a Ch/MH and also has a pile of other titles in obedience, rally and barn hunting (rats). Barn hunting? Yes, it’s actually a sport with titles. The dogs seek out rats held in protective tubes and hidden in barns. Hey, anything that requires dogs to use their noses and hunt something is a positive in my book. Millie’s owner is Jeanne Grimm. Millie is Jeanne’s first hunting dog and Jeanne took her all the way through her MH. Millie truly loves birds and…

IT TAKES A lot to make me cringe. Not my less than sterling academic career, not some of the things I’ve said after one (or two or three or four) beers on a Friday afternoon (my motto: if you’re buying, I’m drinking); not even my single-digit scores on the skeet range. These, among others, I can shine on. But there is one thing that makes me want to plug my ears and run screaming from the room: when certain people describe how they introduced their dog to an electronic collar.Typically, those conversations go something like this: Me: “How did you collar condition your pup? He seems a little, um, uncomfortable with it.” Them: “I just slapped a collar on old Biscuit Eater and lit him up. Boy, he sure listens…
