“I GOT IT over a Jones point, dude!” I screamed enthusiastically up the mountain to my friend Colton. He had just crested the ridge to see if I had connected after hearing the report of my Citori. Turning back to my dog, his tail wagged enthusiastically as he stood over his first dusky grouse. He looked up at me, a feather stuck to his wet nose. I yelled again, this time at him, “Wooooo! Good job, Jones!” “Heck yeah!” Colton exclaimed as I made my way back up the ridge. So excited for Jones’ success, he high fived me with vigor, stinging my hand. Jones and Colton’s 11-month-old cocker, Brooks, bounced around us, reading our energy. Through labored breaths, I recounted the play by play of the special moment. The…
I was pleasantly surprised by GUN DO G’s article on hunting with non-traditional breeds (“The Outlaws,” Winter 2023). The stories of those gun d ogs and their owners mirror my own experience hunting ruffed grouse with a Portuguese water dog. Though a d edicated bird hunter all my life, I’d never used a dog—never even owned a dog—until my wife brought puppy “Finn” home as a family pet. Right away, he showed keen interest in the pheasants that roam our semi-rural neighborhood, so I began to wonder if he could maybe help me find some grouse. With my wife’s blessing, I took him afield one day to see what might happen. Sure enough, within the first few minutes Finn had found and flushed a triple of ruffies! With some further…

SATELLITE IMAGERY To find the roosters, you need to locate prime habitat that will hold them. Utilize onX Hunt’s satellite imagery to do this. OnX Hunt offers both a 2D view as well as 3D, which can be beneficial when you’re scouting from home and looking for terrain details. For early season-roosters, you’ll want to locate cropland, in particular corn and soybeans that sit adjacent to water or grasslands. Birds like to feed on both corn and beans, and roam between crops and grasses during the day. Later in the season, when temperatures have dropped and a layer of snow sits on the ground, you’ll want to change your strategy. Roosters will be looking for both feed and heavy cover. This means frozen cattail sloughs and woody cover. UTILIZE TOOLS…

INNOVATION has swept across every facet of hunting, but perhaps none more relevant to making us more effective bird hunters than the rapid advancements in modern shot-shells. Following the USFWS imposed lead ban in 1991, waterfowl hunters griped about the terminal performance, or lack thereof, of steel-loaded shotshells. Fast forward 31 years, steel still has its limitations, but thanks to rapidly advancing technology and modern manufacturing processes, the terminal gap between steel and lead has been drastically reduced. Kent Cartridge’s newest release, Fasteel+, is a prime example of a modern steel load delivering deadly, dense patterns at neck-breaking speeds. Kent Cartridge originally addressed the downfall of steel by diving headfirst into speed technology and manipulating powder blends to safely increase velocity and terminal performance. In 1998, Kent launched their original…
