ACCORDING TO PUBLISHED REPORTS, the National Rifle Association (NRA) spent more than $54 million on state and federal elections during the 2016 campaign cycle. The majority of that money, $30 million, was used to support then-candidate Donald J. Trump. No other group, including Trump’s own political action committee (PAC), invested so heavily in President Trump’s victory. The times have changed. As of this writing, NRA reportedly spent $16.2 million on the 2020 presidential race, with another $7 million going to support (and attack) various congressional candidates. Those numbers still represent a lot of money, to be sure, but that’s far less than what was spent in four years ago. COMPUTERS WERE UNCOMMON when I started college at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), and the school’s administration was reluctant to allow freshmen to have personal laptops within barracks. “Wanted Dead or Alive” (1958-1961), “Mare’s Leg” Actor Steve McQueen achieved early recognition and popularity in the 1958 to ’61 TV western series, “Wanted Dead or Alive.” Portraying bounty hunter “Josh Randall,” McQueen carried one of the most unusual firearms seen in a small-screen production of the period: the “Mare’s Leg.” This attenuated rifle was built on a Winchester Model 1892 action, had a cut-down stock, large loop lever and bobbed barrel. It was carried clipped in a special waist belt and, though the gun was originally chambered for .44-40 and fired five-in-one blanks, the rig’s cartridge loops were filled with larger .45-70 cartridges. I’VE HAD A COUPLE HUNTS THIS YEAR that educated me on the importance of handheld optics. Choosing observation tools is difficult because they’re usually expensive, and opportunities to test drive spotting scopes and binoculars don’t come along often. Just about every rifle wears a scope these days, so it’s not hard to check out what a buddy might have. However, spotting scopes and binoculars are most often found in hunting camp or at matches. Opportunities to examine spotters are fewer and further in between. Anyone who’s hunted out west knows how important it is to have a good spotting scope and/or good binoculars. “For being sealed up in a chimney, your pistol is in pretty good shape.” PARA-ORDNANCE M1911 IN .40 Q: Several years ago, when Para was still in business, I had purchased and registered several pistols. In fact, I had a relationship with the manufacturer and bought several of their products from private offers to me. One of those was a single-stack Model 1911 in .40 S&W. TAURUS HAS NEVER BEEN SHY about embracing its heritage as a company that builds affordable guns that people want. The new-for-2021 G3 Taurus Optic Ready Option (TORO) and the TX22 Competition continue that tradition, but with a greater emphasis on accuracy.
