Last March, shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Kyiv-based artist Olesia Trofymenko received a message from a curator friend of hers, Solomia Savchuk. Dior, the bastion of French couture and ready-to-wear for 75 years, which has been under the creative direction of the Italian designer Maria Grazia Chiuri since 2016, wanted to commission Trofymenko to make a large-scale artwork for the Fall 2022 couture show in July. “It was a little bit unreal,” Trofymenko tells me, “because it was the first month of war and a really hard time and hard, painful news. So it was like a message from another reality.” Chiuri knew it was a long shot. “I believed it was just a little bit impossible,” she recalls. But she badly wanted Trofymenko involved in the show.…

MELVIN SOKOLKSY MARCH 1963 IN THE 1960S, MELVIN SOKOLSKY’S photography brought an experimental energy to Harper’s Bazaar. Amid an era of social and cultural upheaval, Sokolsky, who passed away on August 29 at the age of 88, sought to unmoor fashion image making from its more classicist roots. His stories were ambitious, otherworldly, and often complex to pull off in the days before digital photography and Photoshop. Perhaps the most famous of them all was his March 1963 bubble series, which featured model Simone d’Aillencourt floating in a space-agey translucent orb. Like many people, I had acne as a teen—small pimples that dotted my nose like freckles. But as I’ve grown older, my blemishes have changed too; they’ve become bigger and relocated to my chin.
