IN 1967, as Harper’s Bazaar celebrated its 100th anniversary, the magazine used the occasion to try to imagine what beauty might look like in the future—a century ahead, in fact, in 2067. The prevailing theory it arrived at back then was that there would be a wide variety of pills to make you look and feel the way you wanted. There would also be at-home devices that could alter the shape of your body, light-sensitive makeup that could adjust to your environment, and adaptive masks that could transform your face. As a kid growing up in Canada, I always had my face buried in a fashion magazine, and Linda Evangelista, a Canada native, was royalty. Her photos were all over my wall. I remember seeing that issue of Harper’s Bazaar with her on the cover when it relaunched under Liz Tilberis in 1992 and thinking it was the most striking cover I’d ever seen. Years later, I got to meet Evangelista when I was a fashion assistant. So to have her back on the cover for our Beauty issue—and to mark her 60th birthday—is really special. I’m thrilled that Anthony Seklaoui, the French-Lebanese photographer, lensed this shoot, his first cover for us. While walking through a quaint street in the 1st Arrondissement in Paris during Fashion Week, I stopped by a milliner’s boutique on the advice of fashion critic Rachel Tashjian. Inside were a number of signature designs, but what really made my heart sing were the customizable options. Head like a bull terrier? She can accommodate! Flipping through old Slim Aarons photographs and inspired by the socialites of yesteryear in boater hats? She’s got you.
