As part of its epic journey around the world, the Queen’s Baton relay last week reached its halfway mark in the beautiful Pacific island of Niue (where it was put on display alongside local crafts, left). The baton, the emblem of the Commonwealth Games, is travelling to 72 Commonwealth nations and territories, covering 90,000 miles in 294 days, before arriving in Birmingham on 28 July for the opening ceremony. The Queen and her family showed their support for the people of Ukraine last week, with the monarch herself making a “generous donation” to help those affected by the conflict. Her gesture was revealed by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), which thanked her for her continuing support of the organisation and “for making a generous donation to the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal”. A new 70-acre forest will be planted at Burghley Estate in Lincolnshire to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – what a wonderful way to celebrate!
