Pioneers and trailblazers gathered at London’s Grosvenor House hotel for the glittering Guba (Grow, Unite, Build Africa) Awards. With this year’s theme of Honouring Beacons of Excellence and Inspiration, role models recognised included broadcaster and former director of creative diversity at the BBC June Sarpong, who scooped the prize for Media Excellence. Welcomed onto the stage by relationship expert Paul Carrick Brunson, star of ITV’s Married at First Sight, and Ghanaian TV host Anita Erskine, June said: “It’s really about celebrating talent of colour, particularly black talent, across the diaspora.
