The 78th Yeovil Ploughing Match Society event was held at Mudford, near Yeovil by kind permission of Guy and Colin Dening last September. 75 tractor ploughing entries and three horse ploughing pairs took part over the day. Tractors are usually brought by a modern four-wheel drive tractor and trailer or a rigid flatbed truck. The first one came a few days ago, and I am very pleasantly surprised at the similar high quality evident in this sister title. In particular, I must compliment you on the comprehensive and outstanding article by Ed Burrows on Cummins Diesels, titled ‘Global Superpower’. The information in this work far exceeds the usual level in off-the-shelf magazine productions. There was even a superb picture of the Cummins Diesel Indianapolis 500 car! The Jowett factory was in Bradford, in the old West Riding of Yorkshire – Riding means a one-third. Yorkshire was a vast area so it was divided into smaller, more manageable areas called Ridings. There was a north, west, and east but no south. The factory was just a few miles away from my childhood home. My father had a 1947 Jowett Bradford van for many years – so many, that as a young lad I helped him maintain and repair it and eventually became old enough to learn to drive on it! PART THREE In this part of the feature we look at two late red Post Office vans, deployed on different duties to the mail vans, firstly a Post Engineering van (PoE) registered at EML 137J and secondly a Driver’s Instruction van (DI) registered as XKG 617K, surprisingly Driver instruction was also an Engineering Dept function! PoE vans Postal engineering vans (PoE) were supplied from 1969 in the mail van livery, but later after experimenting with a stark difference appeared they had a 6in white band painted around the waist of the van back, some also had a white stripe continue over the bonnet and the cab roof. PART ONE The village of Sandford, some seven miles outside the Somerset seaside town of Weston-Super-Mare, will forever be synonymous in road haulage with the name of Sweeting. It could even be called the ‘Sweeting Triangle’ on account that there have been at least a dozen haulage firms in the triangle formed by Sandford, Banwell and Weston-Super-Mare, that have traded under the Sweeting name at one time or another. Several firms still operate under the Sweeting name, these are noted for their individual and distinctive liveries, some vehicles also carrying names. All of them can trace their origins back to Robert Sweeting and his sons. I must defend the TK as I had RSR I 149S British telecom Bedford for many years, started with Dodge Spacevan GSN 205W in 1980 and we had a couple of high top versions in our yard at Crossford Dunfermline. Bedford HA lineman vans, Commers were plentiful and our gang had a BMC pole wagon WLF 745G then a Leyland Reiver, Ford Cargo and a long wheelbase Land Rover which I borrowed a few times to work at Knockhill radio mast. The Leyland Boxer gang wagon and a Leyland Boxer box builder was also in our yard. I was interested to read the article I in the December 2021 issue of Heritage Commercials concerning Geoff Smith’s restoration of his Foden S 10 eight-wheeler, registration number E614 OWT. This lorry’s showland owner was Ken Fox who used it as transport for his Wall of Death attraction from approximately 2000 to 2007. Ken had previously owned a similar model S 10, registration number B246 DWP in a similar capacity, and following disposal of E614 OWT he acquired yet another S 10, registration number G898 HTH which he also used with the Wall of Death until this was later replaced by a Scania. A small selection of tractors was brought to the Show on the back of notable commercials. One of the highlights was a 1978 Leyland Boxer beavertail owned by the Harris Family from the Forest of Dean. The Boxer, powered by a 698 Turbo engine featured a five-speed gearbox with splitter two-speed back axle. The Harris family are only the second owners and have continued the use of transporting agricultural machinery. The beavertail is ideal for helping to haul two small tractors, or as in 2022, one International Titan. Imagine a champion football team facing a season with no fixtures. Late last summer, with nothing in prospect to restore, Ken and Ray Walsh faced a winter of discontent. They are of course old age pensioners. And share a belief that time – the aging process – stands still when you’re having fun. It’s 1981, and Royal Mail are using the Air Atlantique Dakota for their regular night run to Speke airport in Liverpool, the centre of the northern letters and parcel hub. The two Royal Mail vehicles have finished off-loading their postal bags, so just time for a dramatic picture to illustrate their Night Air Mail Service. The Leyland Terrier box van, KJR 48X, carrying Royal Mail fleet number NEPC 121, was new when this picture was taken, with a 1979 Bedford TK box van NUM 331V, on the apron at Newcastle Airport. The TK had a 600 cubic foot body, believed to have been built by Clarke and fitted-up at the Royal Mail’s workshop at Bamber Bridge near Preston. In your January 2021 edition, you published a feature on my friend, Bob Campbell’s very nice ERF B series truck. Since then, I have made a wooden scratch-built and scaled model of the truck. I have attached some photos that you might find of interest. The main reason for this message is that I am considering the subject of my next project and have narrowed it down to either a circa 1975 Volvo F88 or a circa 1979 Scania 111. I have been retired for quite a few years now and these were the vehicles used by my previous employers, Railhead Services and Russell Davies.
