The Heavy Equipment Model Show made a welcome return and was held at Turf Moor (Burnley Football Club) on Sunday 10th April 2022, as Chris Newton reports. Due to Covid restrictions, the last show was held in October 2019 which was its more traditional slot so it remains to be seen if April will become a permanent fixture in the calendar for this event dedicated to Big Kids. As well as the outdoor displays of new and old trucks and machinery, there are also stalls to be found inside along with displays of working models. My priority was to snap some of the older trucks on display in order to compile this selection which I hope that HC readers will appreciate.…

The story goes that it was last used as a milk float for a short time by a local farmer/dairyman, Henry Hanson. Although not really suited to the task since such tradesmen prefer a van with open sides to give quick access to the crates enabling those nimble enough to grasp three pint bottles in each hand! Or, at the very least a van with its rear doors removed. The Second World War broke out in September 1939; and soon the van was taken off the road, and put away in a barn – and never came out! In the last chapter we examined Fred Sweeting and his sons’ involvement in the Sweeting haulage dynasty. In this article we look at his oldest son Frederick William’s association in the family concern. Frederick William (but always known as Bill) Sweeting was born in June 1928 and was the eldest son of Fred and Margaret who had a big family of ten children, eight boys and two girls. When they were old enough, all the sons went to work for their father’s haulage business. We’ve all missed truck shows. A few events have managed to be staged in the last two pandemic-affected years, but they haven’t been the same. The number of exhibits were reduced, attendances were restricted and – well, it just didn’t feel right. The tail end of last year saw a few shows staged without any restrictions, although then winter came and that meant the shows dried up. But luckily, 2022 is looking like the years before the world ground to a halt, and that means a series of Truckfest shows across the country. It was six or so weeks ago – Good Friday evening. My call was to check progress with their Thames Trader restoration. “We’re delivering it to Wrexham tomorrow,” replied a justifiably pleased with himself Ken Walsh. (He changed his phone recently. April started with blizzards across the country, but the next day gave clear blue skies but with a sharp chill in the air. Thousands of enthusiasts gathered at Detling Showground, just outside of Maidstone in Kent to witness some exceptional transporting gems gathered for one of the first times since the easing of the pandemic. The showground played host to two separate but complimentary events, the Heritage Transport Show and the Southeast Bus Festival 2022. Throughout the show there were talks from eminent professionals from the transport and restoration fields and a presentation of the restoration of Chatham Traction Engine Bristol K5G GKE68. Andy Whatling, Head of Historic Collections for London Ambulance Services points out that the collection is unique. “Our vehicles are considered too small for commercial vehicles and too large for car clubs.” The 30 vehicles held in the collection, however, span the entirety of the ambulance service in London from the late 1880s when if you were to fall ill on the streets of the capital it fell to the Police, firefighters or even passing taxi cabs to carry you off on a fleet of wheeled stretchers call ‘litters’ to doctors or an infirmary for treatment of sorts. For the past two years, covid has deprived the heritage trucks community of enjoying the Cheshire Run. The 90-mile circuit of Cheshire and North Staffordshire can be regarded as the starting grid for the North West’s rally and show season. With a significant proportion of likely participants in the pandemic higher risk category, the turnout of stalwarts and survivors for the Run’s return to glory was cause for celebration on both a human and a vehicle level. Living only nine miles from the start, covering the event – traditionally held on the last Sunday in April – was an absolute must. Oops! On pretty much almost any journey you make, even a local trip to the shops, and the chances are you’ll see a DAF CF. This popular little ‘Wendy house’ truck has been a common sight on our roads for nigh on three decades now in its many guises, be it an 85 series, an 85CF, CF85 or just plain CF. In the 1970s, DAF’s long haul 2800, with its F241 cab, stood head and shoulders above the distribution 2300 model, with its similar, but smaller, F198 cab. The new Cabtec 95 series replaced the 2800 (and its later, and bigger 3300 and 3600 sisters) in 1987, but it was to be another five years before the smaller DAFs were replaced. The history of organised firefighting dates back to the beginnings of civilization when hand pumps are believed to have been used by the ancient Egyptians. The Romans also created their own fire brigade, which was reputed to have a nominal strength of more than 50 men. Yet despite their valiant efforts, two thirds of Rome burned down in AD 64. Firefighting in the rest of Europe remained fairly rudimentary, until the 17th century. Despite the formation of night watches, large cities like Paris suffered from several large infernos, and London had to endure the Great Fire of 1666. Following this disaster, insurance companies formed private fire brigades using fire marks to identify the buildings. Initially, CSG was the second waste disposal company in the UK to introduce the Dempster Dumpster dry waste container collection system. This was the ‘Dumpster 5S’ unit mounted onto a Bedford TK 4x2 12-tonne chassis. As the dry waste business expanded, the company purchased larger 4x2 16-tonne load lugger type skip loader units. The first of these, a Commer Maxiload 4x2 16-tonne chassis fitted with a Telehoist ‘Load Lugger CH500M’ equipment, was added to the fleet in the mid 1960s. Additional units with the same type of load lugger system were added as needed, and were mounted onto both Commer and the Ford ‘D’ Series 4x2 16-tonne chassis.
