This O Type was an ex-Government Forces vehicle, that was converted to civilian use in 1950 by Murkett’s of Huntingdon (Vauxhall Bedford dealers). A Scotney’s of St. Ives dropside body was fitted at this time and is still in place, having been restored with hardwood sides. In recent years, this notable commercial has been used as a farmer’s goods vehicle and shows a low mileage. The Mountjoy School Tractor Road Run returned on 23 April 2022, following the inaugural run in 2019. The run in aid of Mountjoy School in Beaminster, Dorset was organised by Richard and Paula Chidley Randall with help from Bradley Chidley and Paula’s mum and dad, David and Barbara Chidley. Around 30 tractors, four lorries and one Land Rover took part on the 35-mile route from Beaminster across West Dorset to the Loders Arms at Loders for lunch before returning to Beaminster. The heritage commercial quartet led out by a 1971 ERF ‘ballast box’ tractor owned by Brian and Angela Johnston from Bridport included a comparatively rare Leyland Landmaster owned by Ian Roper from Weymouth. Just as the artic dominates the roads of Britain today, the mainstay of road haulage from the 1930s to 1960s was the eight-wheeler. In the days when the country had a cohesive transport infrastructure, when ship-born cargoes predated containerisation and railway goods yards were still prolific and localised, it was the eight-wheeler which linked them and delivered right onto the high street. The National Motor Museum in the heart of the New Forest National Park, not far from Southampton and is the proven venue for the Spring Autojumble on 14-15th May. Saturday’s weather was glorious sunshine, but sadly I chose to visit on the Sunday and it was wet with heavy showers, but by choosing your moments, in and out of the rain the autojumble was navigated.
