Sunday 25th September. Location. Pembrey Country Park, Carmarthenshire. The annual steam show took place with miniature steam locos running on the various size tracks to suit the gauge of the handbuilt models with some taking passengers for a run. Miniature traction engines and steam lorries were also running around. A full size steam lorry and steam roller were also shown working. There was a good collection of military vehicles, cars, motor cycles, scooters and some buses were also running trips. Following on from my ‘Disused & Derelict’ article in the December edition of Heritage Commercials, I thought I would follow it-up with a second helping of lorries that have come to an end of their working lives and have been abandoned and are seen in varying states of decay and dereliction. As before, these photographs were taken by the author at various locations over the years, including a well-known scrap yard in Hertfordshire. It should be remembered that most of the photographs included here were taken a long time ago, so many of the lorries featured will have long since disappeared. After reading your article in September’s Heritage Commercials on Staffordshire vehicles, I have found some old photos of commercial vehicles that I used to drive in our family business in Stafford. We were wholesale fruit, vegetable and potato merchants and so I knew Frank Saxton well as we dealt with him. We bought the Leylands from Brownhills Motor Sales as did Frank. Brett grow up in Morpeth, Nothumbria, with Cabstars. When older, he searched for years to find a suitable F20 Cabstar (like his dad had used) to restore. Eventually he found one in Newbury, Berkshire. Seeing the state of it he took a step back, swallowed hard, and tried to be realistic about what would be needed to restore it – it was in a dreadful state. When new, as a chassis/cab, it was made into a motor caravan – the bodywork added panel by panel rather than having a purpose made unit lifted onto its back. This work involved the overcab section being screwed to the Datsun’s cab roof, the chassis extended to take a longer body, all resulting in a gigantic, very top heavy, ugly looking thing. The rear…

Alex Newcombe loves power. His day job is working on 3,100-bhp Electro-Motive two-stroke V12 diesel-electric freight locomotives that run on the UK railway network. A Chartered Engineer with a degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s in railway systems engineering, since the age of eleven he has also been a heritage railways volunteer. Boughton’s supplied their first skip loader unit in the mid 1950s in conjunction with Bennes Marrel of France. Since Boughton’s sold that first skip loader unit the company has developed a wide range of waste handling equipment to meet the UK waste management market’s requirements from the 1950s to the present date. In the late 1970s, the Ampliroll hook loader was launched. This was known as the Super ‘A’ type range which became an instant success with private and public sector waste management companies. As you will have read in Heritage Commercials last month, John Booth asked editor Charlie Waters if he could be put in touch with Ken and Ray Walsh. He wanted to know if they’d be up for restoring an Austin K8 Three Way van. He’d owned two – one for well over 30 years. Both were almost beyond redemption. The Walshes agreed to take the project on. The morning of June 24 2016, and I was driving to Stansted for an early flight to Switzerland. And it wasn’t a pleasant drive as not only was it too damn early, but the news was filtering through that for some reason, more Brits had voted to leave the EU than remain in it. I was not a happy bunny at all, in fact I was livid. When MAN took over ERF in 2000, it soon realised it needed to cut costs, and cut them rapidly. ERF was losing money and simply not selling enough vehicles to keep its unique identity. The easiest way for MAN to save money was to use its cabs. MAN’s initial decision was to use the F90 cab on the ECS model. Luckily, at the time the ECX was launched which used a reworked EC cab. Both models, however, were very short-lived, and in 2002 the ECT came on the scene. The launch of the ECT was MAN’s last attempt to keep ERF alive. By exploiting economies of scale by using the same modern TG-A cab unveiled by MAN in 2000, it was hoped the ERF brand could be kept as a…
