Another book to review kindly sent in by Amberley Publishing, tells the story of Plaxton coach bodybuilders. Founded in 1907, by Frederick William Plaxton, the company started off with a joinery workshop in Scarborough and today, the company is still based in the same Yorkshire town. Plaxton is the only mainstream coach bodybuilder in Britain. The Panorama was the best-selling British-built coach body during the 1960s and its successor the Panorama Elite, featured ground-breaking design and technology we now take for granted with today’s coach bodies. In the Weymouth Ways article in the March issue of HC, on page 16 there is a photo of a Bedford TK of Edmonds Transport from Chickerell. I would be interested to know what the registration No. of this lorry was please for my records. (Ed has asked Joseph). In the same article, I was interested in the reference to Legg of Puddletown. This was William Lovell Legg, who was a pioneer of motorised transport in the county of Dorset, purchasing his first lorry, a second-hand Bussing in 1919. Before this he had a horse and cart and for 31 years from 1888, would go with this to the GWR station at Dorchester to collect the coal for the village. The winds of storm Kathleen couldn’t deter transport enthusiasts from venturing to the Kent County Showground at Detling, just north of Maidstone on Saturday 6 April for the Heritage Transport Show and the South East Bus Festival. It was the first show in two years as last year’s event was cancelled due to the venue being waterlogged. In the days leading up to this year’s event there were fears that 2024 could be a repeat of 2023’s cancelled show, as heavy rain had been forecast for the weekend brought in by storm Kathleen. On the day, however, rain stayed away but strong winds ripped across the Kent County Showground, which is located high in the North Downs. Citroen C15 initially was a panel van introduced from late 1984 seeing production came to an end during 2006, its predecessor was of course the Citroën Acadiane, although for a short period they were produced alongside each other. Incidentally, the name C15 derives from the (GVW) gross vehicle weight being 1500kg, Citroën also produced the C25 and C35 in their larger commercial range, the same logic numbers apply to them. The C15 was based on the Citroën Visa saloon, that was dropped from the car range back in 1988, the van shared the saloon’s characteristics ahead of the B post, however, the rear cargo box was unique to the C15. May be some of our readers have come across a similar scenario as mentioned here. John Crisp wrote in with a query on his 1984 Leyland Freighter. He believes that he can register it as a historic vehicle due to its age but would like to know what he can use the lorry for if it is registered as historic. He uses it to transport tractors to rallies and he has it insured but would like to know if it needs testing as well. He’s not sure what licence he will need if it is registered as historic.
