A SINGLE railwayana collection that almost filled the Somerset bungalow of the late enthusiast who had amassed it over nearly 50 years went under the hammer on September 1. Although the 300 lots comprised mainly West Country memorabilia, there were items from further afield, including a London Underground direction sign and totems from stations near the capital.
The sale was held by Charterhouse of Sherborne, Dorset, whose auctioneer, Richard Bromell, said the collector’s interest in railwayana was initially sparked by an uncle who was a railwayman, although the collector himself worked for Westland Helicopters in Yeovil.
