Have you ever driven through a new neighborhood and had such intense real estate envy that you immediately started searching the area for open houses—even though you live hundreds of miles away and have no plans to move? Lately, I find myself doing this more and more, like when I was visiting my brother, David, and sister-in-law, Tara, in their new home outside of Rochester, NY. I don’t live anywhere near Rochester, and I’ve never dreamed of relocating there. But my brother’s neighborhood, which is dotted with cool 1970s houses and surrounded by nature trails, had me poring over real estate listings my entire visit. I’m far from the only person who searches Zillow for fun. The folks at the site told me that 224 million users visit the site…

Avoid the wall. Leave one to two feet of bare floor between large area rugs and the wall. Otherwise the rug could look like carpeting that didn’t quite make it. Plot your furniture. Chip Wade’s house, high in Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, is a modern marvel: It likely won’t require repairs, or even much in the way of regular maintenance. “Most homes are designed to last about 100 years. This one was designed to last 500,” Chip says. He built the 4,700-square-foot structure using high-tech, ultra-durable materials, including printed steel that looks like wood. Adam Talianchich and Ashley Menger wanted to live in Austin’s French Legation neighborhood for years—some of the city’s oldest homes are in the area—but there was one big problem: The properties almost never come up for sale. The couple waited… and waited…and finally, in 2015, when Ashley was eight months pregnant with their second child, a listing popped up for a small 1960s-era home. “It was in terrible shape, essentially a teardown,” says Adam.
