Drummer Carl Palmer, the ‘P’ in Seventies prog supergroup ELP and famed for his 2.5-ton stainless steel kit, was once rather cruelly compared with a performing seal that, in the middle of nailing its regular bag of tricks, decides to do the ironing as well. Making a stereo recording from a multi-microphone setup at the time of the performance usually requires monitoring on headphones. Although it is far better to listen to what’s going on via a speaker setup in a dedicated room, this is not always possible during a live recording session. The best approach is therefore to record all the microphones separately and mix them down at a later stage while listening via loudspeakers. Monitoring using speakers more closely reflects a normal listening environment and results in a superior stereo presentation in the finished product. OUR GROUP TESTS have followed a reassuringly consistent pattern across the decades we have been doing them. Six products sharing both functionality and a reasonably close price are pitted against one another and the one that offers the best combination of performance, features and value is the winner. In a group where some of the ‘preamps’ could easily contest a completely different roundup, the 3510 sits as an absolutely traditional all-analogue offering. The successor to the long-running and highly regarded 3010, the 3510 doesn’t really seek to change the basic recipe, only to improve in some key areas. Back in the Sixties, if one mentioned to a classical musician Air On A G String, played by The Jacques Loussier Trio, it was more than likely to be met with an air of utter disdain. After all, the piece was a jazzed-up version by Loussier of the second movement Aria from JS Bach’s Orchestral Suite No.3 in D Major BWV 1068, which should certainly not have been tampered with. In fact, Air On A G String is actually German violinist August Wilhelmj’s 1871 arrangement of that particular Bach movement. WITHOUT DOUBT, THE best way to connect your streamer or digital music player to your network is via a cable connection and only a high-quality Ethernet will support the higher speeds required to transmit hi-res audio. This helps eliminate cable-induced jitter of the digital audio signal.
